PROJECT Circular Economy

Improving quarry sustainability in SIRAČ

The project aims to invest in new and sustainable technologies for production processes by acquiring machines (a mobile scalper and a mobile impact crusher) and integrating geology, resource modeling, mine planning, and production software for cleaner production and zero emissions.

Improving Quarry sustainability

In the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, parties committed  to keep the increase in global average temperature well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and to pursue efforts to limit temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius (Article 2). Parties also decided to “reach global peaking of greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible in order to achieve a balance between anthropogenic emissions by sources and removals by sinks of greenhouse gases in the second half of this century.” (4th Article). The implementation of Zero Emission Factories (Cleaner Production) is viewed as the most effective strategy to meet the commitment as it reduces emissions to air, water, and soil, enhance material usage, and reduce energy consumption.

This project promotes and facilitates the application of integrated preventive environmental strategies to processes, products, and services, as well as the modeling of altered production technologies and approaches, in order to strengthen the company’s environmental performance, increase efficiencies, reduce emissions, and resource consumption. The project is planned to enhance annual growth turnover by 25% in 2025 compared to 2021, annual growth profit by 65% in 2025 compared to 2021, employment creation by 4 times in 2025 compared to 2021, and CO2 savings of -713,76 tons by 2025 compared to 2021.

Measures

  • Purchasing machines – a mobile scalper and a mobile impact crusher
  • Acquiring integrated geology, resource modelling, mine planning and production software.

IDN involvement

  • Evaluating the current operation model of the Kamen Sirac d.d. facility and developing an action plan to transform it into a (near) zero waste and emission factory.
  • Presenting the proposed methodology and data collection for the Life-cycle assessment, as well as presenting preliminary results during the first visit to Kamen Sira d.d.
  • Contributing in the development and implementation of “greener production processes”
  • Assessing circularity with a focus on the new product introduced as a result of the Project
  • Presentation of results, best practices of Kamen Sirac d.d. products in Norway, and sustainability and branding recommendations based on the given Life-cycle assessment
  • Assisting with communication and Publicity
